World Briefing | Africa: South Africa: Mandela Is Released From the Hospital

Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former president, was released from the hospital late Wednesday, ending a 19-day hospital stay. Mr. Mandela, 94, has been in frail condition for several years. He retired from public life in 2004 and was last seen publicly in 2010, though he receives frequent visits from old friends. He was hospitalized on Dec. 8 and treated for a lung infection; he also had surgery to remove gallstones, government officials said. Mac Maharaj, a spokesman for South Africa’s current president, Jacob Zuma, said that Mr. Mandela would be staying at home in a suburb of Johannesburg and receiving high-level care there. Mr. Mandela was elected in South Africa’s first fully democratic elections in 1994.
